Joint Research Center

The Institute for Health and Consumer Protection ( is one of the seven scientific institutes of the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the European Commission. Its mission is to protect the interests and health of the consumer in the framework of EU legislation on chemicals, food and consumer products. One of the most relevant areas in which the IHCP applies its scientific experience is Nanotechnology, object of the studies of the Nanobiosciences Unit (NBS), directed by Hermann Stamm. Within the NBS unit, the Nanobiotechnology competence Group Leader is François Rossi.

Role/activity of organisation in the project

JRC is the leader of the subproject (SP) two, that aims to verify the toxicity and biocompatibility of NPs. Moreover, it is involved in biodistribution studies in the framework of SP six
The JRC is testing the basal cytotoxicity of NPs by means of the Colony Forming Efficiency assay on selected cell lines and by means of the viability assay Alamar Blue. Nevertheless, it is testing the interaction of the NPs with the cell culture medium to verify their stability in contact with biological environments.
